The Police have arrested Alhaji Sofo Azorka, a senior figure in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in connection with an alleged assault during a tense parliamentary by-election in Akwatia earlier this month.
The Eastern Regional Police Command confirmed Friday that Mr. Azorka was apprehended in Tamale on Sept. 10 as part of an ongoing investigation into the purported attack on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The incident allegedly occurred during the Akwatia by-election on Sept. 2, which has been marred by reports of political tensions and isolated violence.
Following his arrest, Mr. Azorka was questioned and provided a formal caution statement before being released on bail, police said. He is expected to appear at the Eastern South Regional Police Command headquarters in Kyebi on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 10:00 a.m., ahead of a court arraignment.
In a brief statement, the Ghana Police Service said it “assures the public of a thorough investigation into the matter,” and urged calm as the inquiry continues.
The Akwatia by-election has been closely watched as a barometer of national political sentiment ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
