Gov't Secures Financial Clearance for 13,500 Unpaid Nurses and Midwives - Akandoh

Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance for the payment of salaries and allowances owed to thousands of nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals, addressing a months-long backlog that had sparked growing concern among health workers nationwide.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, said clearance had been secured for 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began national service in early 2024. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance has approved payment for 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited and posted in late 2024.

The clearance for the latter group—initially set to expire on December 31, 2024—has been renewed to ensure full disbursement of outstanding compensation, Mr. Akandoh said.

“The Ministry is putting in place measures as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure the welfare of its workforce,” he added.

The government’s move comes amid growing pressure from healthcare workers and unions over unpaid salaries, which some described as undermining morale and threatening service delivery.

Mr. Akandoh called for calm among health personnel, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to clear inherited arrears and implement safeguards to prevent future delays. He encouraged affected workers to route any unresolved issues through the appropriate channels for swift resolution.
