Fifteen Members of Parliament from the Eastern Region have formally endorsed former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign to become the flagbearer of the opposition Patriotic Party (NPP), signaling growing intra-party momentum behind his presidential ambitions.
The endorsement, made public during a two-day campaign tour through the region, was announced Wednesday by Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, who described Dr. Bawumia as the candidate best positioned to secure electoral victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
“Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated the leadership, competence, and broad appeal necessary to lead the party into the next political chapter,” Marfo said on behalf of the 15 lawmakers.
The group of endorsing MPs includes several influential figures within the party’s parliamentary caucus, such as Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), and former National Organizer Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North).
The full list of supporting MPs includes:
Ida Adwoa Asiedu (Ayensuano)

Dr. Bawumia faces a crowded field in the NPP’s flagbearer contest, including former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, ex-Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The contest is viewed as a defining moment for the NPP as it seeks to extend its political dominance beyond the term-limited presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo, who steps down at the end of his second term in 2029.
While Bawumia is seen as the presumptive front-runner, his challengers are expected to mount vigorous campaigns appealing to the party’s base and broader electorate in the coming months.
