NPP to Push Ahead with September 23 Protest Despite Release of Abronye DC

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) said it will proceed with its planned demonstration on Tuesday, Sept. 23, despite the recent release of a regional party chairman who had been detained on charges of inciting unrest.

Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, was granted bail and released on Monday after spending a week in police custody. Authorities cited health concerns as the basis for his release. He had been remanded on Sept. 12 following his arrest four days earlier on charges of “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.”

Despite the development, party officials say the demonstration will move forward as scheduled. Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha said the protest is not solely about Baffoe’s arrest, but rather part of a broader response to what the party alleges is a sustained campaign of harassment by the government and state security forces.

“We’re protesting against the government’s conduct over the past seven to eight months,” Mr. Mustapha said. “This is not just about Abronye. It is about the abuse of power, harassment by the police and national security operatives, and the growing intolerance of the NDC government.”

The ruling  National Democratic Congress (NDC) returned to power in January, following a closely contested general election. Since then, tensions have flared between the administration and the NPP, which has accused the government of using state institutions to target its members.

Mr. Mustapha emphasized that Abronye’s release does not alter the party’s plans. “This does not cure the problem, and we will not put a stop to the demonstration. The protest will continue unabated on Sept. 23, and further actions may follow,” he said.

According to the NPP, formal notification of the planned protest has been submitted to the police.

The case against Mr. Baffoe remains under investigation. Police have not commented on whether further charges will be filed.
