Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President, will kick off a nationwide campaign tour on Wednesday, October 15, as part of his effort to secure the presidential nomination of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), his campaign team announced Tuesday.
The tour, which will span all 276 constituencies, is positioned as a grassroots outreach initiative designed to reinforce party structures and consolidate support ahead of the NPP’s flagbearer primaries. The party is expected to nominate its candidate in preparation for the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia, widely regarded as a leading contender in the internal race, is expected to engage directly with a broad cross-section of the party’s base, including polling station officials, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives—both current and former—as well as ex-lawmakers and party elders.
“The campaign tour underscores Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to consensus-building and party unity,” the Bawumia Campaign Team said in a statement signed by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the team’s communications director. “It will allow him to share his vision while listening to the concerns and aspirations of party members.”
The statement also addressed growing concerns over the tone of internal party discourse, calling for a campaign based on issues and qualifications rather than personal attacks. Without naming specific individuals, the campaign team warned against the rising trend of vitriolic rhetoric and urged supporters to engage in “fact-based” debate rooted in the comparative strengths of aspirants.
“Conduct that undermines party cohesion is detrimental to our shared objective of winning the 2028 elections,” the campaign said, adding that such divisions “only serve to weaken our collective front.”
The campaign reiterated that discussions should focus on the policy platforms, leadership records, and electability of the candidates seeking to lead the party. It directed all surrogates, volunteers, and spokespersons aligned with Dr. Bawumia to avoid personal criticism of rival aspirants or their supporters.
Dr. Bawumia’s policy credentials and economic background, as well as his long-standing presence in the party, are expected to be central themes of the campaign as he seeks to differentiate himself in a crowded field.
