Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally filed his nomination to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.
The submission, which took place at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, drew massive crowds of enthusiastic supporters who turned the event into a carnival-like celebration.
Clad in the party’s signature white and blue colours, supporters thronged the premises in branded T-shirts, waving flags and dancing to the tunes of a brass band. The charged atmosphere transformed what is usually a procedural filing exercise into a show of political strength and grassroots excitement.
For many, the event signified more than a routine step in the party’s internal processes—it was seen as a defining moment in the race to lead the NPP into the 2028 polls.
Nominations for the flagbearer race opened on July 29, 2025, and officially closed today, August 28, 2025. The party has announced that the full list of qualified aspirants will be published on October 8, ahead of balloting and the election scheduled for January 31, 2026. The outcome will determine who leads the NPP into the next general elections.
