Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deploying thugs to the Akwatia constituency to intimidate voters, despite repeated warnings from the Police.
Voters in Akwatia are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of Ernest Kumi. More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations, with the contest between Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP.
To ensure a peaceful exercise, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,000 officers to maintain law and order. However, speaking to the media at one of the polling centres, Mr. Tanko alleged that the NPP had brought in its own operatives, citing the party’s lack of trust in state security agencies. He referenced events during the Ablekuma North by-election re-run as an example.
“We just had intelligence this morning. It won’t be long—you will hear the outcome. We will arrest them, they will be rounded up, we are on their heels. The NPP has brought some thugs, put them in some location, and national security is on their heels,” he claimed.
Mr. Tanko assured constituents that the Police and national security agencies were closely monitoring the situation and would act swiftly to prevent any disturbances.
“It won’t be long, they will be rounded up, all of them. Nobody is going to be allowed to intimidate anybody here. Allow the voters to do their work,” he stressed.
He further urged voters to come out in their numbers and participate in the exercise, assuring them of full protection by the security agencies.
