Voting is currently underway in the Akwatia constituency of the Eastern Region, where the Electoral Commission is conducting a parliamentary by-election following the sudden passing of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Kumi.
Polls officially opened at 7:00 a.m., with constituents steadily casting their ballots. The contest is between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), on whose ticket the late MP represented the constituency. More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the exercise today, Tuesday, September 2.
At the Wenchi Durbar Grounds polling station, former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, was seen actively monitoring the process in his role as a polling agent. At 7:11 a.m., the first ballot was cast at this polling centre.
By 7:16 a.m., voting had also begun at the Salvation Primary polling centre in Topremang, where 554 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots. Meanwhile, senior NPP figures including Sammy Awuku, Justin Kodua, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and the party’s parliamentary candidate Solomon Owusu were spotted at the Beauty of Nature polling station in Bodua.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Owusu and Mr. Awuku expressed satisfaction with the arrangements so far. On the other hand, NDC National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, stated that the party does not anticipate any violence but stressed that they will not allow themselves to be intimidated.
Voting is expected to continue smoothly until polls close at 5:00 p.m.
