A police station in Kukurantumi, a town in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was set on fire by a group of irate youths following the death of a man who had been held in police custody, according to local authorities.
The unrest began after reports emerged that a suspect detained by the Kukurantumi Police had died under circumstances that remain unclear. In response, dozens of residents took to the streets on Sunday, culminating in the torching of the local police facility.
Officials have yet to release a formal statement on the cause of the suspect’s death, but the incident has ignited public anger and renewed scrutiny of police conduct in the region.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as demonstrators overpowered local security, vandalized property, and demanded accountability from law enforcement.
"This is not just about one person. People are angry because they feel justice is not being served," said a resident who asked not to be named.
Local leaders have called for calm as authorities investigate the events leading up to the fatality and subsequent violence. No injuries were immediately reported from the fire, though damage to the station is said to be extensive.
Ghana’s police service has faced increasing criticism in recent years over allegations of abuse and lack of transparency. The Kukurantumi incident is likely to intensify calls for reform and independent oversight.
An official inquiry has been launched, but details remain limited as of press time.
