Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged that a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will pursue legal action against those responsible for violence during the July 11 parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North, stating that “the elephant does not forget.”
Speaking at the NPP’s Extraordinary National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on July 19, Dr. Bawumia said if the current administration fails to act, a future NPP government will initiate prosecutions once in office.
“I wish to call on the President to prosecute the perpetrators of the violence in Ablekuma North,” he said. “If they fail to do so, we shall prosecute them when we assume power in 2029, because the elephant does not forget.”
The comment was made during a high-stakes conference where delegates are considering over 50 motions aimed at restructuring the party, which is still reeling from its defeat in the 2024 general elections. The event, themed “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” marks a critical turning point as the NPP seeks to reposition itself ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Reflecting on the party’s loss, Bawumia acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic: “Insha Allah, the people of Ghana will give us an opportunity to govern this country again,” he said.
The July 11 rerun in Ablekuma North was marred by reports of political violence, sparking calls for accountability and investigations from both civil society groups and opposition figures. Dr. Bawumia’s comments are among the strongest signals yet that the NPP intends to address what it views as targeted intimidation and breakdowns in electoral security.
