Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put an end to internal wrangling and instead direct their efforts towards holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable.
Addressing delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, 19 July 2025, Dr Bawumia expressed concern over the increasing level of intra-party attacks, which he said often intensify during leadership contests and weaken the party’s unity.
“An army that wants to win a battle must exercise discipline within its ranks,” he told delegates. “Too often, when we are yet to choose leaders, indiscipline, unacceptable language and unpardonable behaviour become the order of the day.”
He warned that such conduct ultimately benefits the opposition, noting that the internal divisions during the 2024 election campaign provided material for political attacks from the NDC.
“We experienced it in the 2024 campaign and we should not let it happen again. That is why I call on all Kukrudites to stop the internal attacks now,” he urged.
Dr Bawumia called for a redirection of energy toward scrutinising the actions of the current NDC administration. He cited what he described as efforts to undermine democratic institutions, including attempts to remove the Chief Justice and target the Electoral Commissioner.
He also condemned recent acts of political violence, referencing the Ablekuma North by-election, where he alleged that NDC supporters engaged in “thuggery” under the watch of the police.
“I again call on the President to bring the perpetrators to book and to remind them that the elephant never forgets. No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029, insha Allah,” he said.
Calling for greater discipline within the NPP, Dr Bawumia urged party leaders to take firm action to preserve order and unity as the party positions itself for the next electoral cycle.
“With discipline, humility, lessons learnt and the pursuit of the common good for Ghana, we can become the refreshed party we desire,” he added.
