The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has shuttered an examination center at Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi following the discovery of multiple mobile phones in the possession of candidates during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, said during a press briefing on Friday that the decision was taken to “safeguard the integrity” of the national examination. The affected students were subsequently relocated to WAEC’s regional office in Kumasi, where they will complete their exams under tightened supervision.
The closure is one of several enforcement actions taken amid a broader crackdown on exam malpractice this year. At least 14 individuals—including students, teachers, and invigilators—have been arrested nationwide in connection with alleged misconduct.
WAEC said it is reviewing scripts from all implicated centers and pledged that any results emerging from those locations will face heightened scrutiny before release.
“The integrity of our examination process remains non-negotiable,” Kapi stated.
The WASSCE, administered annually across several West African nations, serves as a critical benchmark for university admissions and employment eligibility in the region.
