The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for withdrawing from the Tamale Central by-election, but says it is fully poised to wrest the Akwatia seat from the governing party.
NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, made the remarks when NPP leaders visited the party’s national headquarters to commiserate following the recent tragic helicopter crash. He described the NPP’s decision as a step that fosters political stability in Ghana’s charged electoral climate.
“We thank you for withdrawing from the Tamale Central by-election,” he said.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah, however, made it clear that the NDC is preparing for a fierce contest in the Akwatia by-election, set for September 2, and is confident of securing victory.
“We wish to state that we shall contest the Akwatia by-election,” he reaffirmed.
The NDC chairman also expressed concern over growing threats of violence from political youth groups, cautioning that such actions could endanger the country’s democracy.
“All these threats from certain youth regarding the election will ultimately lead to consequences we will all have to face,” he warned.
He urged both parties to take proactive measures to restrain their supporters and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the death of NPP Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi, whose 2020 victory had been legally challenged by the NDC prior to his passing.
