The National Identification Authority (NIA) announced Wednesday it will begin registering Ghanaian children between the ages of six and 14 at all of its Premium Centres across the country, marking a significant expansion of its national biometric registration program.
In a statement dated September 10, 2025, the Authority said the initiative falls under its statutory obligation to register all Ghanaians—domestically and abroad—to ensure each citizen has a secure and verifiable national identity.
The move forms part of the NIA’s broader efforts to build a comprehensive and inclusive National Identity Register (NIR) by capturing biometric data from childhood. Registration at Premium Centres will cost GHC310 per applicant, in line with existing premium service charges.
Required Documentation
Parents or legal guardians must present one of the following documents when registering a child:
A valid Ghanaian passport of the child;
An original birth certificate of the child; or
The presence of a Ghana Card-holding parent or guardian who can vouch for the child.
Starting September 15, the NIA will roll out its online registration and appointment booking system to the remaining 11 Premium Centres nationwide. The system is designed to streamline the process, reduce wait times, and improve service efficiency.
Expansion Plans
The Authority also confirmed that Ghana Cards for children already registered will be issued in due course. Additionally, it plans to expand registration services to all NIA District Offices in the coming weeks, a move aimed at increasing accessibility for families across the country.
The Ghana Card has become a central component in the government’s digitization agenda, serving as a foundational identity document for access to banking, social services, and public sector systems.
