Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has accused the administration of President John Dramani Mahama of leveraging state power to intimidate and prosecute members and supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
On the campaign trail in the Ashanti Region Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia alleged that the government has initiated a pattern of politically motivated arrests aimed at silencing NPP-affiliated figures and social media personalities ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Citing the recent detentions of Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, known popularly as Abronye, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, Dr. Bawumia said the actions reflected an “abuse of authority” by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We’re all witnesses to what is happening after we left office,” he said. “The NDC is harassing, abusing, and persecuting our people. They’ve gone after Chairman Wontumi, Chairman Abronye, our bloggers, TikTokers, and appointees.”
Dr. Bawumia, who is seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 polls, called for unity within the party in the face of what he described as growing political repression. “This shows that we need to come together and stay united if we are to win in 2028,” he added.
