The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called for a renewed national commitment to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two senior government officials.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Dr. Agyemang expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, among them his former schoolmate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister for Defence, and the Minister for Environment, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The high-ranking officials were aboard a Ghana Air Force helicopter headed to Obuasi on an official mission to address illegal mining when the aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Dr. Agyemang noted:
“This painful moment reminds us of the quiet risks borne each day by those who serve our country. Their sacrifice, though often unseen, is real and in this instance, ultimate.”
He urged the nation not to let the sacrifice of these officials be in vain
“If these gallant men were en route to confront the scourge of illegal mining, then the fight against galamsey must now carry the same urgency with which we respond to death itself,” he wrote.
Dr. Agyemang concluded with a solemn prayer for the repose of the souls lost, emphasizing that true honour lies not just in words, but in commitment and decisive action.
