President John Dramani Mahama has announced an ambitious plan to make Ghana fully self-sufficient in chicken production within the next three years through the Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti project, a national initiative aimed at boosting local poultry farming and reducing imports.
During a visit to the National Service Authority Papao Farms in Accra on Friday, September 12, the president said the project is designed to ensure that nearly all the chicken consumed in Ghana is produced locally.
“Once the Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti project takes off, we believe that in three years we will be producing almost 100 percent of the chicken we eat in Ghana ourselves. That way, we can stop bringing in chickens from outside, where we don’t even know how they were raised,” President Mahama said.
He warned of potential health risks linked to imported poultry, citing the use of genetically modified breeds and hormone injections in some countries. According to him, the initiative will not only reduce reliance on foreign poultry but also guarantee healthier, locally produced options for Ghanaian households.
The Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti project will establish a nationwide supply chain, from the provision of day-old chicks and feed to farmers, to the setting up of processing plants and the distribution of packaged chicken under a local brand.
President Mahama said the initiative ties into his broader agenda of supporting youth employment, strengthening agriculture and enhancing national food security.
