EC Reopens Nominations for Tamale Central By-Election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reopened nominations for the upcoming Tamale Central by-election after two of the three candidates who initially filed to contest withdrew from the race.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, 2025, the Commission cited Article 50(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires that if more than one candidate is nominated but only one remains before election day, a fresh ten-day nomination period must be opened.

The new window runs from September 12 to September 21, with forms available for download on the EC’s website. Completed forms may be submitted at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Each form must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder and 18 registered voters from the constituency. Candidates are also required to submit two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background. The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000, with female aspirants and persons with disabilities paying a reduced fee of GH¢7,500. All submissions must be made in quadruplicate.

The Commission urged interested persons to take note of the guidelines.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu as its parliamentary candidate for Tamale Central. The party held its primaries following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, who perished alongside seven others in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
