Kwakye Ofosu: Let Legacy of Fallen Heroes Inspire National Service and Patriotism

Ghana paid solemn tribute Saturday evening to the eight government and military officials who perished in a military helicopter crash earlier this week, in an event marked by grief, reverence, and calls for national unity.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State for Government Communications, delivered a stirring address during an “Evening of Reflections and Memorial” at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, lauding the deceased as patriots who gave their lives in service to the nation.

“They answered the call to serve, facing the inherent risks that come with safeguarding our national peace and progress,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said. “Their tragic passing in the line of duty represents the ultimate sacrifice, a stark reminder of the immense personal cost borne by those who stand ready to serve our nation.”

Among the deceased were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. Six others, including military personnel and national security officials, also died when their aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.

The government has declared a three-day period of national mourning, during which flags are flown at half-mast and all official entertainment activities suspended. Saturday’s memorial offered the public a moment to grieve, while also emphasizing the enduring responsibility of leadership in times of tragedy.

“From this somber reflection emerges a powerful national call to action,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said. “Let us never forget their courage, their commitment, and the supreme price they paid. Let their legacy inspire us to uphold the ideals of service, integrity, and patriotism that they exemplified.”

The government has also announced burial arrangements in accordance with the religious beliefs of the deceased. For the two Muslim victims—Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator—Janazah prayers will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, at the Forecourt of the State House, followed by burial at the Military Cemetery in Accra.

A state funeral for all victims, encompassing various religious denominations, is scheduled to take place Friday, August 15, at Black Star Square, in what officials say will be a formal celebration of their service and sacrifice.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
