A solemn burial service will be held today for two Muslim victims of the Ghana Air Force helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on August 6.
The late Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, former Minister for Environment, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, will be buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
According to a statement from the Presidency, Janazah prayers will commence at 2:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, followed by interment at 2:30 p.m. at the Military Cemetery, also in Accra.
The two distinguished public servants were among those who perished when the military aircraft went down in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region — a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning and drawn heartfelt tributes from across Ghana.
Today’s rites are expected to attract high-ranking dignitaries, including President John Mahama, the Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Religious leaders, among them the National Chief Imam and the leader of the Ambariya Sunni Group, will also be present, alongside traditional leaders and bereaved family members.
While the Muslim burials take place today, a larger inter-denominational state funeral for all eight victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square. This national event will offer Ghanaians a final chance to honour the memory of those who died in service to the country.
