Gov’t to Phase Out Teacher Licensure Exams by August 30 — Education Minister

The Ministry of Education has announced that the final round of the current teacher licensure examination will be held no later than August 30, 2025, marking a significant shift in how Ghana assesses teacher readiness.

Speaking at a media briefing, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed all relevant stakeholders to coordinate with the Registrar of the Teacher Licensure Examination to set and adhere to a firm deadline.

“If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August,” the Minister stated.

Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of the current licensure model and commended the committee tasked with reviewing the framework for its comprehensive recommendations. He indicated that the committee’s proposals would serve as a blueprint for transforming teacher assessment in the country.

“The new model will go beyond paper-based testing,” he noted. “It will incorporate supervised practicum evaluations and structured mentorship programmes to ensure that newly trained teachers demonstrate real classroom competence in addition to academic knowledge.”

According to the Minister, the reforms aim to enhance the quality of basic and secondary education in Ghana by ensuring that certified teachers are not only knowledgeable but also practically equipped to manage classrooms effectively.

Implementation of the revised model will begin after the final licensure examination cycle concludes in August. Candidates who are eligible to resit or join the final assessment are encouraged to prepare accordingly.

“These reforms represent a critical step forward in aligning teacher certification with the practical demands of the profession,” Mr. Iddrisu added.

The transition marks a major development in Ghana’s education sector, as the government seeks to modernize teacher training and improve outcomes for students nationwide.
