Education Ministry Ushers In 590,000 First-Year SHS Students for 2025/26 Academic Year

Ministry of Education formally welcomed approximately 590,000 newly placed first-year Senior High School (SHS) students on Saturday, marking the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.

In a statement released over the weekend and signed by Press Secretary Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry characterized the mass enrollment as a “significant milestone” in the academic journey of Ghanaian youth. The statement encouraged students to embrace this new phase with “dedication, discipline, and enthusiasm,” underscoring the government’s ongoing push to strengthen public education outcomes.

More students are expected to report by Monday, October 20, as the nationwide placement and enrollment process concludes. According to the Ministry, school placements and residential allocations for the current academic year have officially closed.

Parents and guardians were acknowledged for their “patience and cooperation” throughout the placement cycle—a process often marked by logistical bottlenecks and high public interest. The Ministry also urged families to ensure the completion of final enrollment steps to facilitate a smooth transition as academic work begins.

In reaffirming its policy commitments, the Ministry said it remains focused on delivering “quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all Ghanaian children.” It assured stakeholders that operational measures are in place to guarantee a stable start to the academic calendar across all SHS institutions.

The Ministry concluded its statement with a message of goodwill, offering warm wishes to the incoming students and expressing confidence in their future contributions to national development.
