The Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has announced that government will soon install 3,000 LED streetlights across the city as part of efforts to improve visibility and enhance security for residents.
She made this disclosure at the 20th Grand Durbar and Homecoming celebration of the St. John Methodist Church, held at the Tema Manhean Circuit, where she was the Special Guest of Honour.
According to the Mayor, the new streetlights will be designed as all-inclusive units to prevent tampering, theft, and removal of parts, challenges which in the past were often linked to drug addicts. She emphasized that the initiative would not only illuminate streets but also strengthen public safety.
“The planned installation of LED streetlights is intended to curb the challenge of people dismantling parts from existing poles. With these all-inclusive units, we aim to brighten our communities and address pressing security concerns,” she said.
Beyond street lighting, Mayor Bright also outlined additional transformative initiatives that government intends to roll out in Tema, including youth employment programmes and skills development projects. These, she noted, would create jobs, empower young people with employable skills, and tackle the rising issue of drug abuse within the constituency.
“We are committed to implementing initiatives that will transform lives and shape a brighter future for our people. The Youth Employment Programme will equip young people with marketable skills while we work collectively to uproot drug and substance abuse in our communities,” she added.
