A high-speed passenger vehicle crash on the Kumasi–Accra highway left five people dead and several others injured Saturday, authorities said, underscoring persistent road safety concerns along one of Ghana’s busiest transit corridors.
The incident occurred near the town of Asuboi, close to Suhum, when a Sprinter minibus, registered GW-5535-24, reportedly suffered a tire blowout. According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle had been traveling at high speed before the driver lost control, veering off course and crashing.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene approximately 30 minutes after the crash. Five individuals were pronounced dead at the site, while a number of injured passengers were transported to Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention. Officials have not released the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, or inadequate tire maintenance played a role. The accident adds to a growing list of fatalities along the Kumasi–Accra stretch, where high traffic volumes and speeding remain chronic issues.
Transportation safety analysts have long called for stricter enforcement of roadworthiness inspections and speed regulations across Ghana’s highway network.
