Gov’t Closely Monitoring Volatile Security Situation in Bawku and Alavanyo – Defence Minister

Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured citizens that while the nation’s overall security remains stable, government is actively monitoring the increasingly volatile situations in Bawku and Alavanyo.

Addressing the media during the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are on high alert and prepared to respond swiftly to any escalation of violence in these conflict-prone areas.

“While Ghana’s internal and external security remains largely stable, we acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo, and their surrounding communities, remains quite volatile,” he said.

Enhanced Security Operations in Conflict Zones

According to the Minister, the Armed Forces have activated coordinated land, maritime, and air operations across the country. Special attention has been given to areas such as Bawku and Alavanyo, with rapid-response mechanisms in place to manage any potential outbreaks of violence.

“The Armed Forces are actively monitoring developments and have put in place robust mechanisms to ensure that any potential escalation is swiftly contained,” Dr. Boamah stated.

“Our goal is a peaceful and lasting resolution through dialogue.”

He also highlighted the government's commitment to distinguishing between criminal activities and legitimate traditional disputes—particularly in regions where chieftaincy issues are a source of tension.

“We will always separate crime from traditional issues. That distinction allows us to deal appropriately—and legally—with those who incite unrest under the pretext of chieftaincy disputes,” he explained.

Government to Reconstruct Zugran Statue

Touching on recent unrest in Bawku, Dr. Boamah confirmed that government will reconstruct the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, which was destroyed during recent disturbances.

“Let me assure everyone that steps are being taken to restore dignity and stability in Bawku. The reconstruction of the Zugran statue is part of our broader effort to heal and rebuild,” he noted, adding that investigations into the incident are currently underway.

Strengthening Regional Security Collaboration

On the broader front of national and regional security, Dr. Boamah announced that Ghana’s Armed Forces recently participated in multinational military exercises aimed at enhancing cooperation among West African nations.

“We are taking bold steps to address violent extremism, terrorism, and transnational crimes,” he said.

“The Ghana Armed Forces have joined other countries in military exercises designed to improve the capacity of regional forces and promote cooperation across West Africa.”

A Call for Unity and Public Support

Concluding his remarks, the Defence Minister called on Ghanaians to rally behind ongoing peace and security efforts, urging continued trust in the country’s security institutions.

“We all have a role to play in maintaining peace. Let us trust the process and work together towards a stable and prosperous Ghana,” he appealed.
