Fire Officers Rescue Newborn Abandoned in Latrine at Obuasi

Fire officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, have rescued a newborn baby who had been abandoned in a public latrine at Kawmeduakrom in the Obuasi East District.

The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, July 20. According to officials, the GNFS received a distress call around 10:30 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response.

Confirming the rescue operation in an interview with Citi News on Monday, July 21, Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO2) Peter Addai said the team, led by Station Officer II Appiah Kubi, arrived at the scene within minutes and carried out a highly sensitive operation under challenging conditions

“Using an extension ladder, our officers carefully descended into the latrine and successfully retrieved the baby at 11:31 p.m.,” DO2 Addai stated.

Miraculously, the baby was found alive and was immediately rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) in Obuasi, where medical personnel are currently providing care.

Authorities have since launched investigations to identify the person(s) responsible for the abandonment.

The swift response by the GNFS team has been widely praised by residents and local leaders, who have called for increased public education and stronger protections for vulnerable children.
