A dawn fire on Friday, September 19, 2025, ravaged parts of the Madina Market in Accra, destroying several shops and wooden structures but leaving no casualties. Eyewitnesses said the blaze, which started around 1:00 a.m., sent thick smoke billowing into the night sky and drew anxious traders and residents to the scene. Many could only watch in despair as their investments were consumed by flames before firefighters arrived.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed receiving the emergency call at 1:36 a.m., with fire crews reaching the market within two minutes. However, the intensity of the fire and the absence of nearby hydrants made it necessary to deploy four additional fire engines.
According to the GNFS, the blaze affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers. It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m. Despite the destruction, firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby one-storey warehouse and adjoining buildings.
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been established, investigations are underway. The GNFS has reassured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property while emphasizing the importance of rapid response and public cooperation during emergencies.
