The Eastern Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday dismissed speculation that the widow of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, plans to contest the upcoming by-election for the vacant seat.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, the Party described reports and social media flyers promoting Mrs. Mavis Kumi as a potential candidate as “false, misleading, and deserving of the utmost contempt.”
“We wish to categorically state that this information is false,” the statement read. “Mrs. Kumi has no interest in contesting the seat or engaging in active politics at this time.”
According to the Party, Mrs. Kumi has been in close contact with NPP leadership following her husband’s death and has clearly indicated her intention to focus on mourning in privacy, rather than stepping into the political spotlight.
“She has unequivocally communicated that her current focus is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace,” the release said.
The NPP warned supporters and the public to disregard the unauthorized campaign materials circulating online, calling for restraint and respect during a sensitive period for the grieving family. “Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family,” the Party noted.
Ernest Kumi, a first-term legislator, was described in the statement as “a committed patriot and loyal servant” of both the NPP and the people of Akwatia. The Party urged its supporters to focus on honoring his legacy, rather than engaging in political speculation.
“Let us uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that our Party stands for,” Mr. Konadu Addo said.
No official date has yet been announced for the by-election to fill the Akwatia seat.
