The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is set to deliver a landmark address today at the University of Ghana, highlighting the transformative role of education, innovation, and entrepreneurship in driving global progress and deepening UK-Africa collaboration.
The event, organised in partnership with Imperial College London’s Accra-based hub, Imperial Global Ghana, will bring together students, academics, and local stakeholders to explore the future of education and enterprise across borders.
Mayor Khan’s visit is part of a historic five-day mission to Africa aimed at forging stronger ties between London and African nations. His keynote speech will spotlight the critical contribution of international students to London’s economic landscape, while promoting greater educational exchange between the UK and Ghana.
“London thrives because of its diversity, creativity, and openness to talent from around the world. We want to build even stronger connections with Africa’s next generation of leaders,” the Mayor is expected to say.
Promoting STEMB and Innovation
During his remarks, Mr. Khan will draw attention to London’s globally recognised STEMB (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Business) ecosystem, underscoring its potential to support African innovation and entrepreneurship. He will encourage young Ghanaians to harness partnerships with London-based institutions to foster inclusive growth and technological advancement.
Engagement with Ghanaian Youth
Following his keynote, the Mayor will engage in a fireside chat with young Ghanaian entrepreneurs and student leaders, focusing on collaboration as a catalyst for creativity, knowledge-sharing, and economic opportunity.
This dialogue forms part of a wider initiative to strengthen ties between London and Africa’s burgeoning innovation communities.
Imperial College London’s African Presence
Co-hosting the event, Imperial College London is the first UK university to establish a permanent presence in Africa dedicated to science, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Mayor Khan will interact with students and recent alumni of Imperial Global Ghana’s entrepreneurship programme, gaining insight into how UK-African academic partnerships are nurturing the continent’s future business leaders.
The visit represents a key step in advancing the UK’s international engagement through education and innovation, with Ghana positioned as a vital partner in this shared vision.
