Electoral Commission (EC) officials in Akwatia have commenced the sorting of election materials for dispatch to polling stations ahead of Tuesday’s by-election.
The exercise, conducted under heavy security, forms part of final preparations to ensure that all voting materials are delivered to polling centres on time. According to officials, the process is being carried out transparently to strengthen public confidence in the credibility of the election.
Representatives of political parties and election observers were present to monitor proceedings.
The by-election has drawn national attention as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepare for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
Tensions in the constituency remain heightened following a setback in the National Peace Council’s efforts to secure a peace accord between the two parties. At a scheduled meeting at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Akwatia, the NPP declined to sign the pact, rejecting the NDC’s delegation on grounds that it comprised constituency executives instead of national-level representatives.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu has been seen briefing officers deployed for election duties, urging them to remain professional, impartial, and alert throughout the exercise.
