Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, has pledged that a future NPP administration will see through the completion of Agenda 111, a nationwide health infrastructure project initiated under the previous government.
Launched by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Agenda 111 was conceived as an ambitious plan to build 111 hospitals across underserved districts. Each facility is designed to house 100 beds and provide accommodation for medical personnel, aimed at bolstering access to healthcare in rural and peri-urban communities.
“By the end of 2024, many of these hospitals had reached advanced stages of construction,” Dr. Bawumia said Wednesday during a meeting with party executives and former officials in Accra. “Unfortunately, construction has stalled under the current NDC administration.”
Bawumia’s comments signal the NPP’s intent to reassert control over a flagship project seen as central to its legacy on healthcare expansion. The former vice president emphasized that completing Agenda 111 would be a top priority should the party return to office in 2025.
The future of the project remains uncertain under the current government, as fiscal pressures and shifting political priorities weigh on infrastructure spending. Still, the NPP sees the initiative as critical not only to health outcomes but to reinforcing its broader development agenda.
