Ashaiman Traders Protest Alleged Unlawful Eviction by Municipal Assembly

More than a hundred traders in Ashaiman staged a peaceful protest on Monday, August 18, 2025, accusing the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) of attempting to unlawfully evict them from their trading site near the Ashaiman traffic light.

The traders allege that the assembly is acting in the interest of a private developer despite an ongoing court case over ownership of the land.

Clad in red attire to signify their frustration, the demonstrators chanted slogans and displayed placards as they demanded that the assembly respect the judicial process.

According to the traders, they possess valid legal documents permitting them to operate on the land and insist that no eviction should take place until the court delivers its ruling.

Spokesperson Jeffrey Eli criticised the assembly’s actions, describing them as “a blatant disregard for the rule of law.”

“They are manipulating the system to forcibly take over the land despite the pending legal process,” Eli told reporters. “We vow to resist any attempts to remove us until the court determines the matter.”

Several other protesters expressed similar frustration, calling the alleged eviction attempt an injustice that threatens their livelihoods.

The demonstration unfolded under the watch of security personnel, who ensured calm throughout the protest. No incidents of violence were recorded.

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has not yet issued an official response to the traders’ claims.
