A construction worker was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Kasoa’s New Market area on Saturday, following a painstaking two-hour rescue effort by Ghana National Fire Service personnel.
The worker, whose identity has not been released, was pinned beneath debris after a partially renovated residential building gave way. Emergency crews, aided by paramedics who administered on-site care, worked carefully to extract the victim, who sustained serious leg injuries.
According to municipal officials, the worker was initially treated at the Kasoa Polyclinic before being transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further treatment. Two other workers who were on-site at the time escaped unhurt.
The building’s owner, identified as Ali Charles, had reportedly engaged three masons to reinforce the structure after observing cracks in its foundation. The collapse occurred during the course of this renovation effort, raising concerns about construction standards and oversight in the rapidly growing municipality.
Seth Sabah Serwonoo Banini, Municipal Chief Executive for the Awutu Senya East District, commended the response teams for their swift and professional handling of the rescue.
“We are grateful to God and to the team from the Fire Service and Ambulance Service,” Mr. Banini said. “Their coordinated effort ensured that the victim received timely medical attention.”
The affected structure has been cordoned off, and its remaining occupants evacuated. A full investigation into the cause of the collapse is being undertaken by the Municipal Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in collaboration with the Assembly’s Works and Engineering Department.
Kasoa, located just outside the capital, has experienced rapid urban expansion in recent years, often accompanied by concerns over unregulated construction practices and insufficient infrastructure planning.
