The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has suspended its indefinite strike, following what it describes as “productive engagements” with the government.
The industrial action, which was sparked by delays in finalising and signing a long-awaited Conditions of Service agreement, has been put on hold to allow further negotiations.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, the union’s General Secretary, King James Azortibah, confirmed that members are to return to work starting Thursday, 2 October. Staff who are currently outside their duty posts have been given until Monday, 6 October to report.
Mr Azortibah warned, however, that the suspension does not mark the end of the union’s demands.
“We emphasise that this is a suspension and not a call-off of the strike,” he said. “We hope the FWSC and employer institutions will honour their side of the agreement, so that TEWU is not forced to do otherwise.”
TEWU is expected to meet with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on Tuesday, 7 October, in a bid to finalise negotiations and sign the outstanding agreements.
The union has cautioned that it will not hesitate to resume its strike if next week’s meeting fails to yield concrete results.
