Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd. has resumed production and distribution of its Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix after receiving regulatory clearance from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the company announced.
The FDA’s approval, granted on September 12, follows a comprehensive review of Nutrifoods’ manufacturing processes, which confirmed the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of its operations.
Nutrifoods, a joint venture between Singapore-based Olam International and Japan’s Sanyo Foods, temporarily pulled select batches of the product from the market in August after internal quality checks flagged inconsistencies. While no health risks were reported, the company described the recall as a precautionary measure aligned with its consumer safety protocols.
“We took swift action to voluntarily recall affected batches, reflecting our commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards,” the company said in a statement.
In collaboration with the FDA, Nutrifoods underwent a detailed inspection of its factory in Tema, during which it reinforced quality assurance protocols, including tighter process controls and longer product incubation periods. The company said these enhancements were integral to restoring operations and regaining regulatory confidence.
“This review reaffirmed that our production systems and products are fully compliant with the highest standards and regulatory requirements,” the statement added.
Tasty Tom, a staple in Ghanaian kitchens for over a decade, is now back on store shelves. Nutrifoods expressed appreciation to consumers for their patience and apologized for any disruption caused.
Beyond tomato-based products, Nutrifoods operates two manufacturing facilities in Tema, producing a range of culinary items and biscuits for domestic consumption and export. Its product portfolio includes Jollof Mix, Pepper & Onion Mix, and several biscuit brands such as Perk, Nutrisnax, and Royal King Cracker.
Nutrifoods is also recognized as the first biscuit manufacturer in West Africa to achieve certification under the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) via the FSSC 22000 standard.
