The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will take legal steps to safeguard its members during the upcoming by-election in the Akwatia constituency, citing recent incidents of political violence as justification for increased vigilance.
Speaking in an interview Tuesday, Henry Nana Boakye—known popularly as Nana B—the NPP’s National Organiser, said the party will adopt internal security measures to ensure the safety of its supporters during the September 2 poll. His comments follow violent clashes during a recent electoral rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, where NPP members were reportedly attacked.
“We believe it is essential to protect ourselves,” Mr. Boakye told Citi FM’s Eyewitness News. “Self-protection is clearly defined within the boundaries of the law. We are not deploying thugs. We are not deploying vigilantes. We are simply ensuring our people are safe—legally.”
Mr. Boakye emphasized that the party’s protective measures will not violate Ghanaian law and insisted that the NPP remains committed to peaceful electoral processes. He called on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the Ablekuma North disturbances before voters head to the polls in Akwatia.
“We will not engage in any act of illegality,” he said. “Our approach to security is strictly within the confines of the law.”
The upcoming Akwatia by-election is seen as a critical test of political stability in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections, amid growing public concern over election-related violence.
