NPP Plans September 23 Protest Over Arrest of Party Executives

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) said it will stage a demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, to protest what it describes as politically motivated harassment by law enforcement, following the arrest and detention of several high-profile party figures.

The protest, organized by the party’s youth wing, is expected to begin at 6 a.m,starting from the Obra Spot in Accra and proceeding to the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service. The announcement was made Friday by Salam Mustapha, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, in a Facebook post.

The move comes in response to the detention of Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe—widely known as Abronye DC—who was remanded by an Accra Circuit Court earlier this week. Baffoe was arrested on September 8 on charges of “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace,” according to a police statement. He is expected to remain in custody for two weeks while investigations continue.

“The National Youth Wing will organize a demo against the state-sponsored police harassment,” Mr. Mustapha wrote in his post, calling on supporters to turn out in large numbers.

Mr.Baffoe’s arrest is the latest in a series of legal entanglements involving NPP officials. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman—better known locally as Chairman Wontumi—is currently under investigation for alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Additional party affiliates have also reportedly been arrested in recent weeks in unrelated cases.

While Ghana has long been considered a stable democracy in the West African region, the NPP’s leadership says the pattern of arrests signals a broader effort by state institutions to undermine the party’s credibility ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Ghana Police Service has not commented on the planned protest or the NPP’s accusations of political interference.
