The Assistant Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Aniwaba KB Jeremiah, has strongly criticised comments made by Abetifi MP and flagbearer hopeful, Dr Bryan Acheampong.
Addressing party supporters on August 23, Dr Acheampong attributed the NPP’s 2024 defeat to what he described as “tribal dynamics” surrounding Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy.
In a press statement, Mr Aniwaba described the remarks as “most unfortunate,” stressing that it was disappointing for a senior party figure and presidential aspirant to make what he called “unguided and inappropriate” statements. He cautioned that such utterances undermine the NPP’s core values of unity, tolerance, and maturity.
He further urged the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) to swiftly intervene and caution Dr Acheampong. According to him, the Abetifi legislator should issue an unqualified apology to both Ghanaians and the NPP, warning that failure to do so could erode grassroots confidence and weaken the party’s cohesion.
“The NPP has always drawn its strength from inclusivity, embracing citizens from all regions and ethnic backgrounds. Any attempt to divide us along tribal lines is counterproductive and dangerous to the party’s future,” Mr Aniwaba emphasised.
He also encouraged party aspirants to take inspiration from former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, commending his humility, inclusiveness, and commitment to peaceful political engagement. He described Dr Bawumia’s leadership style as exemplary and a model worthy of emulation by every party member.
Mr Aniwaba concluded by urging all party leaders to put the collective interest of the NPP and the nation above personal ambitions. “Only through discipline, respect, and unity can the NPP continue to earn the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he affirmed.
