The final funeral rites for Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and a prominent figure in national politics and traditional leadership, are scheduled to take place Sunday, August 24, at the Astro Turf Park in Damongo. The ceremony will commence at 9:00 a.m. local time.
The rites, announced by Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale I—King and Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area—on behalf of the Gonja Traditional Council, are expected to draw high-ranking government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, diplomats, and a large contingent of mourners from across the country.
Alhaji Muniru, who also served as the Sandape-Wura Buwulonso I within the Gonja chieftaincy, was among eight individuals killed in a helicopter crash on August 6 in the Adansi Akrofuom District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The aircraft, carrying several senior government officials, was en route to Obuasi when it went down under still-unconfirmed circumstances.
Other victims of the crash included Minister of Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye. The Ghana Air Force crew—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also perished.
Muniru, a seasoned public servant and traditional leader, was widely respected for his role in bridging national security and grassroots governance. His death has triggered a wave of tributes from both political and traditional circles, underscoring his influence across sectors.
The Sunday ceremony marks the culmination of a national mourning period and is expected to reinforce the intersection of tradition and statecraft in Ghana’s public life.
