Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and a controversial figure within the party, has been taken into custody by the police, authorities confirmed Monday.
The reasons behind Mr. Baffoe’s arrest remain undisclosed. Law enforcement officials have not released formal charges or provided additional details regarding the circumstances of the arrest.
Mr. Baffoe, widely known by his political moniker “Abronye,” has gained national prominence for his combative rhetoric and unapologetically partisan posture. His detention follows an unusual diplomatic move last week, in which he formally sought political asylum in eight countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany.
In letters submitted to the respective embassies, Mr. Baffoe alleged “consistent, escalating political persecution,” citing threats to his personal safety and what he described as the abuse of state security agencies by the current administration.
The situation escalated further over the weekend when armed police reportedly conducted a search of the residence of Moses Abor, a former NPP Youth Organizer, in connection with the case. Mr. Baffoe was not located during that operation.
Authorities have yet to comment on the asylum claims or the broader political implications of Mr. Baffoe’s arrest.
