NDC's Ewurabena Aubynn to Be Sworn In as MP for Ablekuma North Today

Ewurabena Aubynn, the Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, is set to be sworn into office on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, following a contentious electoral process that concluded with a narrow victory for the  ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Ms. Aubynn made the announcement via social media on Monday, inviting supporters and constituents to attend the ceremony. Her swearing-in comes after months of legal and procedural wrangling surrounding the December 7, 2024, general election, in which the initial outcome for the constituency remained unresolved.

The seat had been hotly contested between Aubynn of the NDC and Nana Owusu Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Discrepancies in results from several polling stations led to the Electoral Commission ordering a re-run in 19 out of 37 disputed stations, which took place on July 11.

Aubynn ultimately secured 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881, flipping the traditionally NPP-held seat and delivering a symbolic win for the NDC in the Greater Accra Region. She was officially declared winner by the Electoral Commission at its regional office that same day.

Her victory marks a rare mid-cycle shift in a closely watched constituency and reflects growing volatility in urban political strongholds ahead of Ghana’s 2026 general elections. The Ablekuma North seat, long considered a safe bet for the NPP, now joins a list of constituencies where political loyalty appears to be shifting.

Aubynn’s induction into Parliament is expected to reinforce the NDC’s push for deeper legislative influence, as both major parties prepare for an increasingly competitive political landscape in the run-up to the next national vote.
