NDC Vows to Reclaim Akwatia Seat in Honor of Late Omane Boamah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is gearing up for a high-stakes by-election in the Akwatia constituency, with party officials expressing confidence in their chances to reclaim the seat from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Monday ahead of the Africa-Singapore Business Forum, Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the party is determined to secure a win in the September 2 contest—not only for political gain, but as a tribute to the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, a key party strategist and former Minister of Defence.

Dr. Boamah, who also served as the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, passed away earlier this year. According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, Boamah had laid the groundwork for an NDC resurgence in the constituency prior to his death.

“We all miss Dr. Omane Boamah,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said. “Before he passed—so tragically and so unexpectedly—he had already begun laying the foundation for victory in Akwatia. In his memory, we will follow through with those plans and strengthen them further.”

The by-election was triggered by the death of Ernest Kumi, the NPP Member of Parliament for Akwatia. The race is expected to be tightly contested, with both major parties mobilizing significant resources in what is seen as a litmus test for their national appeal ahead of general elections.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that an NDC victory would ensure better parliamentary representation for the people of Akwatia, aligning their constituency with others that, in his words, “are being properly represented in Parliament.”

The contest is drawing increased attention as both parties look to solidify support in the Eastern Region—a key electoral battleground with broader implications for national power dynamics.
