The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to maintain ties with its living former presidents and foster internal unity, as the party attempts to rebuild following its 2024 electoral defeat.
Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held Saturday at the University of Ghana Stadium, Ludwig Hlordze, the NDC’s Director of Logistics and Protocol, emphasized the critical role a united opposition plays in a functioning democracy.
“Ghana needs a stronger opposition to enhance our democracy,” Mr. Hlordze said. “We hope the NPP emerges from this conference focused on reconstruction, and with a renewed sense of unity.”
He underscored the importance of drawing on the leadership experience of former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cautioning the NPP against sidelining them. “You need them, and they need you. Don’t alienate them. Consult them continuously to help build a strong and credible opposition,” he noted.
The NDC also commended the NPP’s ongoing internal reforms, aligning them with what Mr. Hlordze described as a broader “national reset” aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s political and institutional frameworks.
“Ghana is going through a reset. It’s critical that all political parties rethink their policies and programs. We’re encouraged to see the NPP undertaking that task,” he said, adding that constructive opposition would support national efforts led by President John Mahama.
Mr. Hlordze concluded with a broader call for political responsibility, stressing the importance of preserving Ghana’s democratic institutions for future generations.
“We must grow our democracy and build a just, opportunity-rich nation for ourselves and for the generations to come,” he said.
