The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today, Saturday, September 6, 2025, hold its parliamentary primaries in Tamale Central to elect a candidate for the upcoming by-election.
The contest follows the tragic passing of the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, who died alongside seven others in a helicopter crash.
A total of 12 aspirants, including three women, are contesting the slot at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. Party officials say the race is expected to be keenly contested, with the winner positioned to retain the seat for the NDC and continue the legacy of the late MP.
To ensure order, the Northern Regional Police Command has deployed more than 400 personnel to maintain security before, during, and after the polls. Regional Commander DCOP Wisdom Lavoeassured residents and delegates that robust arrangements are in place to guarantee a peaceful and credible process.
The NDC Regional Directorate of Elections and IT has also issued detailed guidelines for the primaries. According to a notice signed by Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari, Director of Elections and IT, voting will begin at 9:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m. sharp.
The process will feature four ballot boxes, each serving designated electoral areas. Delegates will be issued QR-code-enabled tags and required to present an additional form of identification, such as a voter ID, Ghana Card, or party membership card.
Security measures include restrictions on mobile phone use inside voting booths and a ban on candidates transporting delegates or campaigning at the venue. Accredited observers will be confined to the supporters’ stands and may only access the inner perimeter with prior clearance.
Each candidate is permitted four agents per ballot box, though only one will be allowed to sign the collated sheet. Additionally, two accredited representatives per candidate will have access to the inner perimeter.
Polling stations have been mapped to specific wards:
• Polling Station 1 – Regional and constituency executives, Agric Mohiyebihi, Gumbihini North, Aboaboo Ward
• Polling Station 2 – Moshi-Zongo, Tishigu, Salamba, ADB, Warizihi, Gumbihini South
• Polling Station 3 – Dakpemfong, Buglanfong, Sabonjida, Victory Ward
