At an interdenominational state funeral held Friday in Accra, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) paid tribute to the late Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, describing him as “utterly fearless” and a strategist whose influence extended beyond politics.
Delivering the party’s eulogy, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said Dr. Boamah exemplified courage and conviction in public service, noting that his legacy would endure in both the party and the nation’s political history.
Dr. Boamah was one of eight individuals who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6 in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The incident has sent shockwaves through the country’s political establishment.
Among the deceased were Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
The Ghana Air Force also lost three crew members in the crash: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The tragedy has prompted nationwide mourning and renewed attention on the safety protocols of the Ghana Armed Forces’ aviation operations.
Dr. Boamah, a trained medical doctor and seasoned politician, previously served as Minister for Communications and was widely regarded as one of the NDC’s most loyal and strategic minds.
