The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on law enforcement authorities to swiftly arrest individuals who allegedly assaulted senior party officials during a funeral event in the Eastern Region, warning of direct action if no arrests are made by September 1.
The demand follows a confrontation last Friday at a one-week memorial service for the late former Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi. Tensions escalated when NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and his entourage arrived at the Wenchi Durbar grounds, where they were reportedly met with hostility from a group of women and supporters affiliated with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media, approximately 20 individuals attempted to physically attack the NDC delegation, barring their Akwatia parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako, from entering the premises. The NDC maintains it was officially invited to the event and had received a formal gold-embossed invitation.
In a statement issued over the weekend and signed by Deputy Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the party demanded that the Ghana Police Service identify and prosecute those involved. The NDC set a deadline of Monday, September 1, for the arrests. Failing that, the party says it will take matters into its own hands and apprehend the perpetrators by Tuesday, September 2, and deliver them to police custody.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to publicly comment on the incident or the NDC’s ultimatum. The confrontation highlights rising political tensions as the country approaches a highly anticipated general election.
