Mala Majo Festival Returns with Renewed Energy

The annual Mala Majo Music and Dance Festival returns on Saturday, September 6, 2025, promising another vibrant celebration of traditional and neo-traditional artistry in Nungua and its surrounding communities.

Organised by multi-instrumentalist, choreographer, and singer Fredrick Nii Kpakpo Addo and his One Spirit Africa outfit, the festival will take place from 4:00 p.m. at the Nungua Main Lorry Station. True to tradition, the event is free and serves as a platform for artists to showcase their talents, network, and give back to the community that helped nurture them.

This year’s lineup features a rich mix of performers, including Adotey Tetor, Fofoo Attiso, African Dance Rhythms, Efutupa Crew, Nyonmo Da Ensemble, Full Energy Band, Lipstick Queens, One Spirit Africa Band, Hejole Dance Ensemble, Nana Senti, Akwantufuo, Emmanuel Dance Ensemble, and Universal Wonderful Academy.

“Those of us in the traditional music sector need to do something to help ourselves. It is hard to access support from the corporate world and individuals, but we cannot just sit, fold our arms and cry,” said festival founder Fredrick Addo. “That’s why the festival was instituted—to encourage and elevate ourselves.”

Beyond music and dance, this year’s edition introduces a new component: mental health advocacy. The organisers are partnering with Ghana’s Mental Health Authority and MindFreedom Ghana, who will be present to engage with the audience and share insights on well-being.

Addo stressed the importance of mental health, especially for the youth. “There are many young talented people wasting away due to harmful habits. We want them to come to our event, enjoy the music and dances, and interact with the mental health experts. They could leave with useful tips on how to lead more productive lives,” he noted.

Over the last 15 years, One Spirit Africa has taken Ghanaian and African culture to international stages across Australia, Europe, and the Americas through performances and workshops. The Mala Majo Festival continues that mission locally, promoting the idea that with dedication and hard work, young artists can achieve their dreams.
