President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors working on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road project to complete the long-delayed works by the end of the second quarter of 2026.
The President gave the directive during a working visit to the site on Wednesday, September 3, where he was accompanied by the Minister of Roads. He expressed cautious optimism about progress but stressed the need to maintain momentum and ease the burden on motorists.
“I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from now till you finish the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as you are working so that you don’t impede the flow of traffic,” he told the contractors. “So we will hold you to your work. You say by the end of the second quarter next year you should be finished.”
The Ofankor–Nsawam project, which officially commenced in July 2022 under the Akufo-Addo administration, was initially scheduled for completion in July 2024. However, multiple delays linked to funding challenges have pushed back the deadline, fueling frustration among drivers and residents who have staged protests over worsening congestion and environmental concerns.
Mr. Mahama’s directive comes amid mounting public pressure for accelerated improvements on critical highways, particularly along heavily used commuter routes such as the Ofankor–Nsawam corridor.
