President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in the Chinese capital with First Lady Lordina Mahama to attend a high-level international forum focused on women’s empowerment, as part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral ties and attract investment from Asia’s largest economy.
The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, scheduled for October 13 and 14, is jointly hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Women. The summit commemorates the 30th anniversary of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995, and the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. World leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to the original Beijing Declaration and accelerate progress on gender equality initiatives worldwide.
Mr. Mahama’s visit, however, goes beyond advocacy. His agenda includes high-level bilateral meetings with President Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, as well as a series of engagements designed to bolster Ghana’s economic relations with China. These include meetings with leading Chinese business executives and the hosting of a Presidential Investment Forum aimed at connecting Ghanaian businesses with Chinese investors.
The West African leader is accompanied by a delegation of senior government officials and trade representatives, including Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, along with officials from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Free Zones Authority, and Ghana Export Promotion Authority. The delegation is also scheduled to visit Fujian Province, where they will meet with Chinese firms already operating in Ghana.
Other members of the president’s delegation include Gender Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza, and Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko. Presidential aides and staffers, including Executive Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama, Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Deputy Spokesperson Shamima Muslim, and Staffer Nana Yaa Gyantuah, are also part of the trip.
The visit is expected to reinforce Ghana’s longstanding partnership with China and expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, trade, and industrial development.
