Kwabena Agyepong First to File Nomination in NPP Flagbearer Race

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has become the first aspirant to officially submit his nomination to contest the party’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr Agyepong arrived at the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, 26 August, where he was greeted by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters and party faithful. His submission marks the beginning of what is expected to be a highly competitive internal contest for the party’s top position.

The NPP opened nominations for the flagbearer slot on 29 July 2025, with the window set to close on 28 August.

The party has announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, 31 January 2026, to elect a candidate to lead it into the next national polls.

In a related development, the NPP leadership has expanded the voter register for the upcoming presidential primary to include additional categories of party officials and dignitaries. This change was announced in a circular issued on Tuesday by the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, William Yamoah.

The update is said to be in line with Article 13(1)(11) of the party’s constitution and follows a motion adopted at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held on 19 July 2025.

Dr Agyepong’s early submission signals the start of what could be a defining chapter in the party’s journey toward the 2028 elections. More candidates are expected to file their nominations ahead of the deadline.
